December was a month of transition for the YC...











We said good-bye to our fabulous friend & Youth Worker, Laura. Thank you Laura for all of your creativity and spirit!! Please come back and visit ANYTIME!! We will miss you :)

With Laura's departure we welcome our new and equally fabulous Karyn!!!Karyn is excited to be at the YC and brings with her a fun personality and a zest for life!!! Can't wait to see what she has up her sleeves for us at the YC!!

Christmas Shopping Trip!

It's that Time of the Year again!!! Put on the Shopping Shoes and come to Conestoga Mall with us on Friday Dec 12, 2008 leaving at 6 p.m. from the Youth Centre. Get your Permission Form and hand it is ASAP to guarantee your spot!

Gingerbread Houses

Put on those Christmas Thinking Hats and design a house. Come out to the Youth Centre tonight (Friday) and help us build the best gingerbread houses ever!!! Whom ever builds the best house gets a prize. Draw for finished house at 9 p.m.

Friday Night Karaoke Night

Calling all singers (and wanna-be singers). We are doing a Karaoke night at the YC on Friday evening and you are invited to join us if you are in grade 6 to age 19. We have some songs or you can bring your own (appropriate ones only, please!). You will also get to meet our newest staff member, Karen, who will be replacing Laura at the Youth Centre. Can't wait to hear y'all.

Games Night

Come on out to the YC on Thursday Nov. 27 for a fun night of games. We have several new ones planned for the evening! See what you can win and have fun even if you don't! Bring a friend and you and your guest get in free. See you there!

KD For All

. . .including Kelly and Laura. On our Kraft Dinner night, we weren't sure if we would have enough with such a large crowd! But, in the end, we had lots. Thanks to J. and B. for helping make the Kraft Dinner and veggies. And, some of the veggies were even from our own garden. How cool is that??!! Rather than the 100 mile diet, we had the 1 block diet!

Round Table Night

We had an awesome turnout for our first Round Table night on Thurs. After pulling all the couches and comfy chairs into a circle, we dove right into our topic for the night: DATING. WoW! Did we ever get some great participation in our discussion! (Maybe the candy bars had something to do with that). Anyway, can't wait until for our next one in November. Any suggestions for the topic????

15th ANNUAL BOWLATHON

Calling all bowlers and non-bowlers alike!!! We need an energetic group of 5-7 youth to join Laura and myself SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2008 for an hour of BOWLING FUN at Elmira Bowl from 2-3pm. We will have our sign up at the YC tonight for all of you who wish to sign up. We ask that you wish to participate, that you either donate $10.00 (or more if you want :) or collect pledges for that amount (again, more would be greatly appreciated!). This tournament is next weekend...so let's jump on this one!!! Pledge forms will also be available for this exciting event. Let's all help to raise money for a very important cause in our community.

"Survey Says......" It's FAMILY FEUD NIGHT @ the YC

We are so pumped about tonight's YOUTH CENTRE FAMILY FEUD!!! Shortly after 6 o'clock pm, we will divide into 2 "families" and "feud" it out to see who the winning family team is. This game is a classic television game show that has been on television for over 30 years....(that's right peeps, if you haven't heard about this one, you may just be living under a rock - jokes ;)

We are fortunate enough to have scored an updated DVD version of this fabulous game to entertain us this evening. So come out and join the FEUD - Family feud that is!!!

What Do. . .

. . .spoons, cheat, 21 have in common? Cards, of course! Come out tonight for some serious card playing and try your best to beat Laura and Kelly. In fact, bring your own card game (not a gambling one) and beat us big! Winners get prizes!

Designer Pillows

On Friday, we made our own designer pillows. After choosing from several hip material choices, guys and gals alike worked hard at cutting and tying to complete their project. If you know how to cut with a scissors and tie a double knot, you can make your own pillow too. Next time you are at the YC ask us how. We have a few kits left. Thank you to Len's Mill End store in Hawksville for generously donating all the material and cushions for our project. Pictures to follow!

ODD GIRL OUT - Movie Night on the BIG Screen

Laura and I really hope you all can make it out to next Thursday's movie night! We are showing a FABULOUS movie on the BIG SCREEN and serving all you can handle popcorn. We are showing the movie ODD GIRL OUT - The film is based on the advice book Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls by Rachel Simmons.

We've gone CARROT CRAZY!!!

WE'RE CARROT OBSESSED at the moment....Last night at the YC some of us ventured down to the community garden where we planted some vegetable seeds in the spring. I was totally pumped to see that we were able to harvest two large buckets of carrots!!!!

Thank you to the youth who were willing to dig in the dirt and get in touch with mother nature :)

I am also glad that many of the youth enjoyed sampling the freshness of raw carrots as well - nothing tastes better than straight from the garden!

We started last night with the cleaning of the carrots and will continue tonight as well. You may be asking what we are doing with all of these carrots?????? Well CARROT CAKE of course!! What better way to celebrate a bountiful harvest and to celebrate our youth than with a satisfyingly yummy cake!!! We plan to top it all off with a creamy, sweet and slightly tangy cream cheese frosting. Have I tempted your palette??? We'll come out to the YC tonight and share in the fruits of our labour - see you tonight!

BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING...

We are heading over to Waterloo for some back-to-school shopping @ Conestoga Mall. Mark your calenders for Thursday, September 11th. Come by the Youth Centre for your permission form. Cost of this event is $1.00.

We Need Your Help - Elmira Poultry Fundraiser

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are looking for volunteer youth to sell Elmira Poultry chicken as part of our on going fundraising efforts for the Woolwich Youth Centre. As a non-profit centre, we rely on opportunities like this to raise money for our centre and make it the best one we can! Please pop by the Youth Centre or Woolwich Community Services (on Arthur Street, just down from Shoppers Drug Mart) to get your forms to sell or make a purchase.

Why not get a group together and try out one of our local hiking trails??? Not sure where they are?? Pop by the WCS (Woolwich Community Services) office on Arthur St. downtown (near Shoppers DrugMart) and pick up your guide to woolwich trails for a minimal $5.00 charge. Remember to stay safe, stay in groups & ALWAYS let your family know where you are going!

PARTY TIME

Last night was the big night! We had our end-of-the Summer party. The guys and girls had a great time competing against each other in the relay race. It was a race to see who could eat the caramel the quickest. The trick was getting the hang of using those big farmers' gloves to open the caramel. Oh, and the guys had to put on an evening gown outfit while the girls had to put on a motocross outfit. We had lots of great laughs cuz putting on tights is harder than you think (right guys?) and eating a caramel thru a motorcycle helmet is quite tricky (right, gals?)

We also had the draw for the prizes in "The Race for the Golden Ticket" event. The winners are as follows:

PARTY TIME!

Mark Thurs. evening on the calender to come out to the YC for our End-Of-The-Summer Party. We will be holding the LAST golden day activity and everyone who participates will get a whopping 10 tickets! We will also be doing the draw for our awesome prizes that evening. There will be great snacks and something special for Meaghan who is leaving on Friday.

Spa Day at the YC

Nothing like an afternoon at the spa. Here are some L. B. and H. B. putting the works on their nails. Even some of the guys got and education on doing their nails.

In July, we took an afternoon and headed out to the Waterloo Rec. Centre for a swim. Here is a photo of one of the YC youths going off the platform. (Looks like he is practicing for Bejing)

YC News

Today we had a very busy day at the YC. We had about 25 people come and were rockin' all day long. Lots of music, ping pong, and pool. There was a line up for the computers and the snack shack was BUSY! If you weren't out, we missed you! See ya next week for our last week of summer fun and The Race for the Golden Ticket!

Reminder. . .

. . . next week we will begin to pass out the tickets you have been earning all summer. You can drop them in the box of choice for any of the prizes. Don't forget to come out for the last of our Golden Days to earn more tickets. Also, we are cancelling the Busker's Festival outing due to lack of interest and workers able to go. So, Friday, Aug. 22 we will at the YC all day; not at the Busker's Festival!

Wonderful Wonderland

Yesterday was our trip to Wonderland and it was great! 19 of us went and the weather was perfect (except if you wanted to swim; then it was a bit cold!) We left the YC at 8:45am. and got home at 10pm. The Behemoth only "devoured" 4 of our group, partly because the line was so long and partly because some of us were too chicken! Pictures to come. . .

M.E. rock climbing and L.B. on the rope walk at Bingemans. After getting rained out for the water slides, we were sent indoors and received a "Big Ticket" for the indoor area. We had lots of fun on the "glow-in-the-dark" mini golf course, too.

Summer Fun

We have been having an awesome summer! Here are some of the highlights:

• Mini golf at Gus Maui golf course. Was it ever busy there, though, and we had to keep ourselves occupied while waiting. Some decided to get wet in the pond!
• The addition of ROCKBAND! SWEET!
• Going to the movies with Meaghan. Tyler sharing his licorice was great!
• Spent the day at Bingemans. We got 2 hours in the water park before they closed it because of stormy weather. BUT, we did get to have fun indoors with rock climbing, rope walking, and glow-in-the-dark mini golf.
• WCS BBQ for 2 days. The youth helped make candy kabobs which were a big success!
• Our trip to Canada's Wonderland is now planned. Stay tuned for details.

Movie Night....No...COSBY Night....

We intended on showing Mr. Magorium Wonder Emporium...but ended the night with a couple of classic episodes of the Cosby Show. A couple soda pops and a bowl full of gourmet popcorn, the night was a blast. Stayed tuned for our next Movie Night on the BIG Screen!

Last Night at John Mahood...

So we said farewell to our season of gym nights, last evening with some fun activities! We played Frisbee, capture the Frisbee/dodge ball and had some good conversation! Gym Night will continue during the summer - but will take place at the Youth Centre or off campus. Please stay tuned and ask for the latest copy of our Youth Centre calendar....

GET OUT Y'ER Gardening Gloves...

Hey all! What a great time last night. Balderdash was fun...your answers were very creative and well delivered! You ROCK! Also, we were very excited to see everyone enjoying the new computers...if you haven't come out to the YC to check em' out - you definitely should (a vast improvement from the previous ones).

A QUICK NOTE: we regret to inform all those who were looking forward to Paintball tonight - we have had to cancel the event due to low registration. HOWEVER...if you are still interested, please let us know by email: woolwichyouthcentre@hotmail.com Shoot 2 Splatter has invited all those who would like to come out, to come out on Saturday or Sunday (1-4). The only hitch, we have to forward your name, because they will honour the discounted price for you :)

Sooooo.... tonight....we thought we might get our hands dirty and plant some seeds in our garden plot on Snyder Ave. just down the road from the YC. If you want, bring seeds, gloves, shovels..etc..or use ours. We will meet at the YC for 6 and make our way down to the garden around 6:30. This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a new summer hobby and reap the benefits of your hard work! Check out the recent pics of our plot in the community garden!

Techies...

Yaye...so the BRAND NEW computers are here.....and the BEST part is WE got them up and running on Friday night! We had a couple of issues...but we are all good now ;) We could have used a bit of help from some of our tech guru type youth :) ...Check out a couple of the pics...

Let's just say that last night's Fear Factor was gross! We had a good turn out and thanks everyone for eating all of the scrumptious food :)

...In other news...
We have a plot of land in one of Elmira's community gardens. Our plot is located in the Snyder avenue location and is open to you. If you would like to participate in the planting, maintaining or EATING the "fruits of our labour" let us know! Planting will start this weekend - so long as the weather holds up.....

SHOOT 2 SPLATTER

We are so pumped about this upcoming event! Mark your calender - June 6th...we, the YC are going to play PAINTBALL. C'mon out and join in this awesome activity...and the best part...ONLY $25.00 for the entire night! That includes your gear, 300 paintballs and admission (oh and of course we can drive you to and from the YC)... The event runs from 6:00-8:45pm.

Register ASAP as spaces are limited - first come first served. Come out to either Wednesday night gym night or the YC next Thurs or Fri to pick up your registration form and sign up.

AQUATICS NIGHT @ Elmira Pool

Last night was a blast!!! Thanks to all of you who came out and made our card night lots o' fun! The game of Spoons has officially been changed to Forks..LOL!

Don't forget to get selling!! Elmira Poultry and Pepperette sales as fundraisers for our YC!! Remember a prize goes out to the highest sales over $200.00!!!

TONIGHT is Aquatics Night @ Elmira Pool. Please meet at the YC between 6:00 and 6:45pm. We will head over to the pool once we have a crew. Cost for this event is $2.50 per youth. The YC will be open after swimming until 10:00pm...join us for a couple of games.
